Designing a Groundbreaking Lipstick

Carslan, a top-notch cosmetic brand in China, has set out to create a pioneering lipstick that goes beyond the ordinary. Inspired by the function of cosmetics to help people remain young and forget about age, designer Tiger Pan has developed the "Freeze Into Fragment of Time" lipstick.

The design draws inspiration from the hourglass, symbolizing the passage of time. The hourglass-like body of the lipstick is covered by highly transparent PETG, giving it the appearance of an hourglass frozen by an ice cube. This visual representation conveys the idea that all cosmetic products should essentially stop time from flowing away, helping women maintain their beauty and grace at any age.

What sets this design apart is its use of deconstructionism to express the idea that all women, with their different personalities and values, should be respected. The irregular multifaceted scales on the packaging reflect even the weakest beam of light, turning it into a highlight. This unique feature adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the product.

The realization of this design posed its own challenges. Carslan wanted to maintain the dreamy feeling refracted by the solid material while ensuring a high-quality product. To achieve this, a two-time injection molding method was researched and implemented. This method solved the problem of material shrinkage and surface unevenness due to thickness, while still retaining the light refraction that gives the lipstick its enchanting appeal.

The "Freeze Into Fragment of Time" lipstick measures 20mm in width, 20mm in depth, and 80mm in height. It is a compact and stylish addition to any makeup collection.

The project, led by Chief Designer Tiger Pan, lasted for two months and was designed in Shenzhen and produced in Beijing. The collaboration of the design team members, including Assistant Designer Yahui Wang, Technical Support Zhangkun Xie and Miaorong Lu, Video Editor Chao Ma, and Project Manager Hua You, ensured the successful realization of this innovative lipstick.

This groundbreaking design has garnered recognition and accolades. In 2023, the "Freeze Into Fragment of Time" lipstick was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness. It recognizes the incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
